Introduction

            Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (CoMET) is the first specific pathogen free (SPF) laboratory animal facility build in this country that is conforms to international standards in terms of temperature, ventilation, humidity and lighting. This unit also plans to seeks accreditation from Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International (AALAC), a globally recognized international body that accreditate laboratory animal facility, to validate that this unit is managing and utilizing the animals in accordance to international guidelines. With validation from AALAC, this unit thus would able to attract more contract research from private sectors, national and international agencies such as from USA and Europe. This unit planning to seeks accreditation for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) from Standard Malaysia that recognized good quality of laboratory services.

                To undertake this task, CoMET will be equipped with the state of the art equipments as well as has in its organization, experienced, well trained and dedicated personnel who will provide excellent care and services to animals. This unit will be the centre for research and breeding of SPF laboratory mice and rats in UPM.  To meet the best services for customer, this unit will provide 24 hours veterinary services. Apart from this, CoMET will also be able to provide training and courses for students and researchers in various disciplines of laboratory animal science.   Experimental Medicine Unit aims to be the center of excellence and competence for laboratory animal research in the future.
